THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a program that encourages youth and young people to better themselves and their community through physical activity, community service, and skill development. The program is open to youth ages 14 and up. Entry is at the Bronze level, and the participant then moves up through the Silver and Gold standards. As the standard increases, so does the amount of hours required to fill each requirement. This encourages young people to be determined and set a goal to achieve greatness. I am currently enrolled in this program. I have received my Bronze and Silver standards, and I am awaiting the next Gold standard ceremony to receive my certification. Throughout my teenage years, this program gave me a reason to be involved. It taught me the importance of not only working to set a goal for yourself, but also how important it is to give back to your community. I have had younger teens ask me if they should enroll in the program - and I always encourage them to do so if they get the chance. "Scholarships and Awards." University of Prince Edward Island. "About The Award." The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. N.p., n.d. Web. Retrieved 01 December 2014. UPEI CELEBRATING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
The UPEI Celebrating Student Achievement Awards are designed to promote student achievement by guaranteeing scholarships to students with marks above 80%. With hundreds of students named to the Dean's Honor List this past year, the award has certainly served its purpose of motivating students to attain the highest marks they can.
Personally, this has motivated me to work my hardest to receive a scholarship each year. It may be an extrinsic motivator, but it works very well in bringing out the best in students. When students are motivated to do their best, it creates a positive working environment on our campus, which in turn will boost our work ethic and attitude towards school. In my opinion, these awards are a fantastic thing to implement at a university. There's nothing a university student wants more than to get out of school with a degree and be debt-free, so when our school offers us something like this, it will obviously motivate us. I am very grateful for this program! |
ERIN HANSON QUOTE
Erin Hanson is a young teenage writer, who's quote "What if I fall? Oh, my darling, what if you fly?" became well-known on the internet after it was taken from one of her short poems, entitled "What if I fall?". Erin is a 19-year-old writer from Brisbane, Australia. She has been writing since a young age, but only recently started posting her work on her blog. This quote has become a sensation on website such as Pinterest and Etsy.
I first saw this quote a few months ago, while scrolling through Pinterest. It really stuck with me after seeing it, because I was going through a period of transition in my life where I thought I was biting off a bit more than I could chew. There were leadership roles being offered to me that I wasn't sure I could handle. After seeing this quote, I realized that I shouldn't be doubting myself - instead, I should be seizing every opportunity I am given to learn and grow as a person and as a leader. This coincides with my leadership development goal to be more confident in myself. |

PHYS ED 621 - HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP
Phys Ed 621 is a high school course in Prince Edward Island that teaches grade 12 students the fundamentals of leadership. It is very focused on the physical education aspects of leadership, but also teaches students about leaderships styles, how to lead in their school, and how to be role models.
When I was in high school at Bluefield, I took this course. During this course, a project that we had to do in groups was to lead an intramural for the school. My group decided to create a new intramural - Survivor. It was a lot of work and we didn't even think it was going to work out, but we ended up having the biggest intramural involvement of the school year. It taught me how to work under pressure, manage a very large group of people, and how to be in a group that may not work well together all the time. We pulled through, and I will remember that leadership experience for a long time. At graduation, I received the dedication prize for this course! |
MCGRAW-HILL PUBLIC SPEAKING APP
This is an app that helps students prepare for public speaking presentations. You record yourself saying your speech, add presentation notes, and listen to your presentation. It will also indicate how many times you used fillers or hesitated, such as "ummm", "like", "you know" and other fillers similar to those.
This is very helpful, because I find the more that I practice something, the more comfortable I am with it. With one of my leadership developmental goals being to improve my self-confidence, this is something that is very useful for me. When I am more comfortable with a presentation, I am not as nervous. Therefore, my self-confidence doesn't hinder my performance, because I am more confident in my abilities. |

PERSONAL CONNECTION: DAN DOCKSTEADER
For the past 3 summers, Dan Docksteader has been the camp director at Camp Keir. Dan has experience as a junior & senior counsellor, as well as assistant director. He lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia and works as a teacher throughout the year. Dan is compassionate, hard-working, and always looks for the best in everyone.
I started working at Camp Keir three summers ago, the first summer that Dan was director. I was one of the youngest staff members at the time, and Dan helped me ease into my new role as a junior counsellor. Throughout the years, Dan has given me confidence to do things I never could have imagined. I learned how to be in charge of a group of kids, how to be confident in my decisions, and how to really be an effective leader. One of the biggest things Dan has encouraged me to do is to utilize my talents. I love singing and playing guitar, but have always had self-confidence issues playing in front of people. Dan has pushed me to play in front of the camp, and this past summer I actually helped lead the worship band. Without Dan's encouraging leadership ways, I never would have done that. Dan cares about all his staff, and I will never forget how Dan has encouraged me to be confident in myself. |
