Personal Leadership Portfolio
Discovering my leadership styles
Throughout this semester, I was able to learn more about my leadership habits every chapter. It helped me to read through the chapter, and then find out where I fit in. It was then neat to go back and read through again, and really see how the descriptions suited me.

Chapter 1 focused on different approaches as to what leadership is. This questionnaire focused on how you individually approach leadership - and I would have to say that I'm not overly surprised with my results. I believe that leadership takes influence, desire, and the drive to accomplish something. However, I also believe tat a good leader reflects these things in utilizing their skills, showing so in their behaviour, and forming those relationships with the followers. This is why I think my top 4 scores are so close. I don't think that leadership is a natural trait or ability, and it is quite accurate that those turned out to be my bottom two results.
Chapter 2 was an interesting chapter because it went quite in depth on personal traits. I had my parents fill out the survey after I had done so, and our results are actually pretty similar. In the areas where we differ, there are mainly two reasons. If my parents rated me higher than I rated myself (self-confidence, self-assurance, and outgoing) are areas where I personally lack self-confidence. If my parents rated me lower than I rated myself (persistent, determined, dependable, and conscientious), these are areas that I personally would like to think I am good at, or would like to be good at. Maybe I'm not perfect at them, so it was interesting to see where people that know me so well put me on a scale of 1-5! Chapter 3 wasn't a surprise to me, with my results indicating I am a democratic leader by a landslide. I believe that the best way to lead is to work with people, not to let them do it all on their own. If you are engaged with your followers, your results will most likely be more beneficial! I try my hardest to be a democratic leader in every leadership setting I find myself in. Chapter 4 ended up showing that I tend to tasks more than I tend to relationships. I wasn't really sure what result to expect going into this questionnaire, but I have to say that I'm not totally surprised. I am a very organized, diligent person so I like staying on task. I also try my best to make those relationships along the way, so I would have expected the scores to maybe be a little bit closer. Chapter 9's results are all very close! I would like to think that this means I am quite well rounded when it comes to handling conflict. Collaboration came out on top, and I would have to agree with that. Instead of trying to get one person's way, I would rather see everyone work together to come up with a solution. Often, when everyone's points of view are brought up, others will see the good in multiple points of view! When people are all on the same page, I find that is the easiest situation to work in. Chapter 11 gave me some difficulty in narrowing down my top two core values. I ended up with happiness and integrity. I chose happiness because ultimately, if you are not happy with yourself or what you are doing with your life, you aren't enjoying life. Life is meant to be enjoyed! I also chose integrity because having strong morals and sticking to them is very important to me. I find that integrity and honesty go hand in hand - you have to be honest with yourself and others to hold a high standard of integrity for yourself. It is important to me that I am respected for who I am by others, and the only way to really earn that respect is to be honest. |
In looking over these results, I now have more of a sense of who I am as a leader. My strengths are that I like to focus on getting the job done in an organized, well-mannered fashion. I care about my followers, and like to include them and lead "with" them instead of to simply lead "at" them. I think that everyone has potential, and every leader should be able to find it within them. My downfalls are that sometimes, I might be too well-rounded. Leadership styles conflict for me sometimes, which makes handling a situation difficult. I haven't quite found my perfect fit for a leadership style, so often trying to incorporate multiple doesn't work!
